For most Mariner outboards the serial number tag is located on the swivel bracket (port or starboard). The top number on the plate is the serial number, and the number directly beneath it is the four-digit year of manufacture.

The first serial number sold in a year becomes the beginning serial number. Serial numbers between that year's beginning serial number and the next fall into the same year.
